Windows Mobile 6.1, htc tytn and FAT32 storage card

When you want to flash your windows mobile device with a new rom directly from a storage card, you need to format that storage card as FAT32, so the device can access the rom-image-file on the storage card at boot time.

After i successfully flashed my device I wanted to install some apps on the storage card as well, to save internal storage of the device. However, after each reboot these apps were gone and I couldn't explain why. Files and folders that I manually created on the storage card were kept and the storage card was not encrypted as well.

One day a light bulb appeared over my head: Let's try to switch back to FAT16 for the storage card. So I...

  • ...backuped all my storage card contents
  • ...formatted the storage card in my card reader of my laptop with FAT(16) and standard block size
  • ...restored the former storage card contents
AND: BING! Installation of applications on the storage card works fine again...
